Markavious “Mark” Dewayne Rumph

18 years old · Eufaula, Alabama · May 2026

Who he was

Markavious Rumph Jr., known to his family as "Mark" and "Lil' Mark," was 18 years old and had recently earned his GED. He had plans to attend welding school in Eufaula. His family described him as outgoing and the life of the party. "He was gonna make you laugh," they said. A family member reflected: "Everybody makes mistakes but God gives you enough time to change it, and he did that. That's why he graduated and did everything that he did."

What happened

Markavious was last seen around 7:30 p.m. on May 6, 2026, at the Beeline #3 gas station on Highway 131/431 in Eufaula, getting into a black Nissan. When he did not return to his grandmother's home, his family reported him missing and began searching on their own after receiving troubling information circulating in the community about what may have happened to him. For five days, family members and volunteers searched wooded areas, rural roads, and isolated properties throughout Barbour County — including through rain on Mother's Day weekend. On May 11, the family's search party discovered dismembered and burnt human remains on White Oak Church Road. His mother had told him that morning they were going to find him that day. "I felt it in my heart because I had to pray too hard about it," she said.

Police response

The family's account of the police response and the department's account differ. His mother, Yolanda Wynn, stated publicly: "I looked for five days for my son, with no help from the Eufaula Police Department. Me and my family in the rain on Mother's Day, I walked through those woods." The family organized their own search with community volunteers and said they did not feel police treated the disappearance with the urgency they expected.

Eufaula Police Chief Danny Christ disputed this account after an arrest was made, stating that detectives contacted Rumph's parents on the first day he was reported missing to build timelines and trace his last known locations, and that significant evidence was recovered on the second day of the investigation. The department has not addressed the family's specific characterization of inadequate response.
